This Bittersweet Life

I love carbs.  I mean I really love carbs.  Pasta, bread, bagels, pasta...did I mention how much I love pasta?  As I watched the numbers on the scale slowly go up over the years, I've come to realize that my metabolism just can't handle the amount of starchy carbs I've been eating.

Gone are the days when I'd have an English muffin for breakfast, a bagel sandwich for lunch and some sort of dish with pasta...or heaven forbid, a grilled cheese sandwich on slices of French bread.  I've been limiting my starchy carb intake and amping up my fresh fruits and veggies as well as my protein.  I've added things like chia seeds to my diet.  Now, hard boiled eggs are a good snack instead of some crackers.  (Sorry, rosemary and olive oil Triscuits!  I do miss you!)

To help with the change in diet, my mom and I purchased the Nutra Ninja Nutra Bowl Duo so we could start making healthy breakfast smoothies.  (We aren't getting paid by Ninja for this blog post, so what follows is my honest opinion.) I had been pinning healthy smoothie recipes for days in anticipation.  So as soon as it arrived in the mail I unpacked it and got it all set up.  I even looked through the recipe book that came with it.

And I of course had to make my first smoothie not long after that. I was inspired!  I read through the directions on how to use the system, filled my cup the correct way (fresh on the bottom, liquids, sticky stuff, then frozen), twisted on the blender blades and snapped it into the base unit.

This system is easy to use with the Auto-iQ technology.  I selected the boost because I had some seedy fruits then hit the smoothie button.  WHOA!  I thought the blender was going to lift off like a rocket!  This little baby has some serious power behind it at 1200 watts.  No wonder why the base had suction cups on the bottom to stick it to the countertop!

The result was a perfectly blended smoothie.  No chunks and most of the seeds were ground up well into fine little bits. No yogurt was stuck to the sides of the cup unblended.  It was really quite amazing compared to our old blender.

Ever since, I've made myself a smoothie nearly every morning for breakfast.  Occasionally I will let myself have something starchy or I'll opt for something with eggs, but as a lover of all things fruit, I have really been enjoying these smoothies!

And with the two cups that come with the system, both my mom and I can enjoy a smoothie in the morning.  We have even pre-prepped smoothies the night before, sticking the cups in the fridge.  In the morning we add some ice and blend.  The results were just as perfect.

I really love tart things.  It's an inherited trait.  As a young girl, my Oma loved to eat lemons like oranges.  So any chance I get to have tart citrus fruits, I'm all in.  This particular recipe can be sweetened up to taste by adding honey if you aren't a sour puss like me.

I just love the dark pink color of this smoothie!  And the tart flavor mixed with sweet fruits is so much better than the faux taste of cherry limeade drinks you get at fast food joints, plus it's way healthier.  The chia seeds give you an added boost of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, iron and calcium.  Limes aid in digestion, cherries and pomegranate seeds are packed with antioxidants and the blueberries and blackberries have vitamin C.

I've been occasionally chronicling my family's story of new beginnings here on our blog.  In the last blog post, we had just sold both my mom's house and my Oma's house and were living temporarily with family while our new house was being built.  My mom and I have now been living in our new home for nearly a year and a half now and we couldn't be happier.

Our home last summer prior to adding my garden beds.
Those three months were tough living with other family.  I won't go into all the details but I did a lot of driving back and forth between my dad's, music rehearsals and my sister's apartment.  I felt like a gypsy constantly on the move.  I even drove down to our lot to check on the progress of my mom's new house.  Move in day could not come soon enough--we were so excited to get back to a normal life and enjoy our new house.

Move in day went smoothly.  We hired College Hunks and the four young men who helped us move were so courteous and efficient.  As a thank you, my mom made sure to order them lots of pizza for lunch since they helped us move out of three storage units and into our new home.

The main living area after moving in.  You can see that the our furniture is dwarfed by the size of the home.
I think it took us the better part of that first year to really get settled in.  Because packing was so haphazard with two houses going into three storage units, there were a lot of boxes to sift through.  And despite the fact that we had three storage units full, we donated a lot of furniture.  Our new house was much larger than either of the houses we came from and some of the furniture we did have was dwarfed by the size of our new house.

Our new table prior to getting additional chairs.
But we have enjoyed taking our time filling our house with new furniture we actually want.  We didn't want to buy just any cheap thing because we needed something.  We wanted it to be nice.  Two small cabinets, 2 chairs, 1 long dining table, 6 dining chairs and 8 counter stools (6 with backs and 2 without) later, our main living area is coming along quite nicely (thank you, Pier 1, especially Brandon at our local store)!  We still need a very, very large china and buffet hutch to store all of the china and crystal we inherited from my Oma and Opa.  Luckily, we have a whole wall!  My mom has been eyeing the Tucker Wall Unit from Pottery Barn.  It is the only thing big enough in our decor style that would work and we love that it is modular!

Our living room after getting our new chairs and small cabinets as well as our new area rugs.  (Yes, that is a wine fridge you see in the top right! There is that cute bunny garland!)

We have also been fixing up the guest bedroom and downstairs bathroom in an Austrian ski chalet theme in honor of my Oma.  My mom stopped calling the bedroom the "guest bedroom" months and months ago, referring to it as "mom's room" or "Oma's room."  We've layered grey and white sheets, a quilt and a duvet on the bed, adding snowflake accent pillows.  Around the bed we hung photos of my Oma and her family in Austria.  Here and there about the room are other snowy-themed items: wooden snowflakes, an antique sled, my mom's old skis, my Oma's old ski boots and some faux alpine trees.

After getting our new table for the dining room, we moved our small round table downstairs to the family room.  We put my mom's leather furniture down there.  Our TV armoire is dwarfed by the wall.  Eventually, we move that armoire to the guest room and buy an entertainment unit.  But for now, it works.  We plan to make this room a ski chalet lobby theme with movies and games.  My Oma loved Scrabble.  I really want that large wall Scrabble board from Restoration Hardware.  You have no idea how badly I want a giant Scrabble board in honor of my Oma.

My mom's bedroom is simple.  We still need more art on her walls.  (Hello, Jacob!)
My mom has kept her own bedroom simple.  I let her have my tall set of drawers to place her TV on. She placed the faux leather chair she had in her room at my Oma's in her sitting area.  Her shower is huge--you could fit 5 people in there comfortably.  It's perfect for her to easily step through with a walker when she gets older.  I gave her my teak bath stool to hold some of her shower supplies.

My Scrapbox Workbox 3.0 all closed up.  I still needed to attach the crown.
Upstairs is my own little slice of heaven.  I call the loft my "scrap loft."  And thanks to my Oma, I have a fabulous storage unit to hold all of my scrapbooking supplies--a Scrapbox Workbox!  It was made specifically for scrapbooking so it couldn't be more perfect.  When I'm not using it, which isn't often, it folds up into a tidy little armoire.  When it's open, there is 9 feet of crafting bliss!   I also have my counter height craft table, some storage cubes (yes, I have that much scrapbooking stuff) and my desktop computer.

My Scrapbox Workbox 3.0 open and with the crown installed.  I have a lot of supplies!
Just off my loft is my own bedroom with an on-suite bathroom.  I've never had such a large room before, let alone an on-suite bathroom.  My old bedroom was just barely big enough for a twin bed, small nightstand, small writing desk and a tall set of drawers.  Even then I still had to shimmy around between furniture.  Now a queen-sized bed, a larger nightstand, a TV armoire, a chair and a set of nesting tables fit very comfortably in my room.

My bedroom.  I also need more art on my walls.
We even have a small bedroom near the entry that we use as my mom's office.  Right now it's just a computer desk with my mom's computer, a chair and a small shelf unit.  Eventually we will need some bookcases.  There is also a bathroom off this bedroom.  I had a friend of mine from my flute choir alter one of my old shower curtains to make it longer.  She added a pretty ruffle of fabric to the bottom in a matching color.

My mom's office.  We need bookshelves because we have lots and lots of books.
For now, our storage area is full of boxes of books, china and holiday decor.  But we have already hosted a family Christmas party with my dad's family and I've even hosted a flute choir board meeting at our new house.

Outside I'm working on my gardens.  I brought some daylilies from my Oma's pool area.  I thought they had died before I managed to get them in the ground but they magically started growing one day in the little terra cotta pots I brought them in.  They have now all been planted and I dug out gardens around each of the trees in the yards.  I've planted ponies, hyacinth, tulips, daylilies, lilies, iris, allium, phlox, daisies, echinops, anemones, grecian wind flowers, astilbe, coral bells, columbine, lavender, snowbells and more!  I even planted some freesia in a pot so that I can bring it in to winter.  We've filled our window boxes with annuals and put them along the front porch.  I have a huge pot of lilies on the front porch as well as a potted geranium and fuchsia.

My garden bed out front this spring.
I intend on moving some of the rock to make more gardens.  I still have so many other things I want to plant--like some rosebushes for my Opa!  My Opa also planted clematis at my Oma's old house.  One of these days we will have a few trellises with clematis and climbing roses.  The combination of the two is lovely.

Part of the garden bed in the backyard. In the back corner is our lovely new hummingbird feeder.
We have two hummingbird feeders now (the one that looks like a giant fuchsia bloom is from Desert Steel--they have really cool stuff so you should check it out!) and I've got my birdbath installed for the summer.  My Oma's outdoor furniture has been placed on the back patio and front porch.  My mom hopes to one day have a pergola or covered patio out back.  But right now, we are finally getting our fence installed.  I've been taking my dogs out on leashes for the past 7 years and I'm ready for a fenced in yard again!

My giant pot of lilies is full of these gorgeous blooms--Eyeliner Lily.
Inside, my potted hydrangea has had a rough two years but it is finally starting to come back to life.  I put it outside during the summer on the front porch and it actually flowered this spring!  My aunt even brought back a few of the plants she took from my Oma's house back to my mom.  In our kitchen sink window we've planted a few herbs and even have a small fairy garden pot in the window at our stove.

Our patriotic bunting for the Fourth of July last summer.
Though it really makes me miss my Oma, I have really been enjoying decorating for the holidays--it's bittersweet.  We've purchased a few new things here and there, adding to our collection.  Last summer we bought bunting for the Fourth of July--we've never had a porch railing before and we were excited to decorate it!  We've purchased glimmer strings to fill our lanterns by the front door.  But Halloween was my favorite--I made my own Dead and Breakfast sign.  But that is another post for another time.

Our home set up for our family Christmas party this past holiday season.  We don't have a chandelier yet over our dining room table so we made one with a branch, a glimmer string, some crystals, clip on birds, fishing line and clear Command hooks.
The only major issue we had was with backfilling around the house that caused the ground around the house to sink.  It of course happened during our monsoon season and so water would rush into our window wells.  Luckily, all new houses in our state are required to have a sump pump and each of our window wells had a drain to the pump.  So no damage.  But the builder did finally get the issue resolved at the end of last summer.

All in all, we are thrilled with our new house!  This new beginning has come in chapters over the past 2 years but my mom and I are finally able to start over.  We've been taking more time for ourselves, working on our own health and I'm back to working!  I finally got a position doing contract social media work that still allows me time to do my custom scrapbooking business.  And the best part--I work from home!

Our front yard this spring. Our white crab apple tree was in full bloom and the bees were loving it!  (That is the model home next door.  They have rock and plants in front of the garage for now.)

We hope to add more blog posts as we add furniture and gardens to our new house and of course all of our trials and tribulations in doing so.  I'm sure we'll have some funny and moving stories to tell.

Winters in Colorado are usually cold and long.  They last from late October into mid to late April.  This year has ben unseasonably mild, with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal and hardly any snow.  None the less, I still enjoy any opportunity to bring Spring into my home.

I of course asked my scrapbooking extraordinaire daughter, Adrienne, to make me a bunny banner for our mantle.  I suggested using flowers and butterflies as the tails on the bunnies and Adrienne couldn't have done a better job!

Here are her simple steps to making this easy bunny banner.  She has even supplied the bunny template for all you DIYers out there (link at the bottom of the post)!

Start by cutting out the bunnies on white cardstock.

Next, cut butterflies out of patterned cardstock using a punch.  Adrienne's punch is by Fiskers and was purchased at Micheal's.  Gently bend the wings up to create more dimension.

Then gather up some paper flowers.  You can purchase these from your local craft store in the scrapbooking section.

And using hot glue, an artist's medium or some other type of really good adhesive, glue the butterflies and flowers onto the bunnies to make their tails.

For hanging, Adrienne glued some small clothes pins onto the backs of the bunnies to clip them onto the baker's twine.  She said you can also punch holes into the ears and string your ribbon or twine through instead.

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue Ocean, roll!
Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain;
Man marks the earth with ruin; his control
Stops with the shore; upon the watery plain
The wrecks are all thy deed, nor doth remain
A shadow of man's ravage, save his own,
When, for a moment, like a drop of rain,
He sinks into thy depths with bubbling groan,
Without a grave, unknelled, unconfined, and unknown.

This is a stanza from "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" by Lord Byron.  It speaks to the power of the ocean and those watery depths that seem so mysterious.  When you stand on the shore, the salty air blowing through your hair and watching those waves crash on the beach, you feel like just a small part of the world.  The vastness of the sea is compounded by seeing sky meet water.

This 18x20 canvas is full of color and texture and includes seashells from Fort Bragg as well as some
from our mother's trip to Cancun.

Hello everyone I hope you are all having a great day! I think winter has finally come to Colorado Springs and I have been snowed in a few days this past week. Since I was not able to really go anywhere I was able to take some time to let my creative juices flow and think of a blog post for you all. Today's post will be about how I make my soap, essential oil and water spray solution. This is so simple you should be able to re-create this very easily.

I got my soap and water spray inspiration from the place I used to work at. I worked at a Child Development Center as an Early Childhood Teacher and we would use soap and water in a spray bottle to first clean the surface and then use bleach and water solution in a spray bottle to sanitize the surface after it was cleaned with the soap and water. (We, of course, could not put any scented oil in the soap and water spray because of state regulations.)

One day I was cleaning at home and I had gotten my cleaning cloth wet with warm water and then pumped some soap on to it, dropped a little bit of lemon essential oil on the cloth and started to wipe my counters down. I then thought why am I not making the soap and water solution in a spray bottle like at work! Ever since then I have been using this spray to first clean off my counters and then go in with a disinfecting spray such as the Method Antibacterial.

I change up the essential oils I use in this quite often, but this go around I decided to try peppermint oil and Grapefruit oil together. Usually I only put in one essential oil, but I deiced to be bold this time and mix two. The oils that I use and are familiar with are doTERRA and Young Living. I know that Bed Bath & Beyond, Walgreens, and some natural grocery stores sell essential oils as well. I have never tried any of those so I am not sure about the quality of them. I do enjoy the doTERRA and Young Living oils. I think that Young Living's oils might be a little better quality but they are also more expensive than doTERRA.

To make this solution you will first need a spray bottle I got mine from Walmart, Dawn dish soap or any dish soap of your choice (I just really like Dawn the best) and any essential oil sent you like.  My go-to is Peppermint. I know some essential oils have antiseptic properties to them such as lemon and grapefruit but I really just like using them for the sent. I loved that my bathrooms and kitchen smelled like peppermint and grapefruit instead of an obnoxious chemical sent.

To make this solution:

You will first fill up the bottle room temp water.

Then you will add two table spoons of Dawn Dish soap

I then added about 10 to 15 drops of Peppermint Oil

and 10 to 15 drops of Grapefruit oil

After doing all these steps I gave the bottle a little shake to mix it all together. You can always add more soap or oils to your liking. I like to have enough soap in the bottle to give it a nice light blue color.

Hey everyone! I hope you all are having a great week and you only have one more work day to go! Today I wanted to share my night time Skin Care Routine with you. My night routine is pretty similar to the day time routine only without the sunscreen. I try very hard to keep everything fragrance free, but cosmetic companies have not really caught up on the fact that fragrance is actually not good for
the skin and can cause allergic reactions. I am a heavy make up wearer so I really have to make sure I get it all off by doing the double cleanse method. My skin type is combination oily and I have mild adult acne that I am treating.

I use an oil based cleanser, then I go in with my face wash and my clarisonic brush,  I also use an eye makeup remover after all of that just because I wear two water proof mascaras and a water proof eyeliner. Next I apply my humectant on damp skin, seal it in with my moisturizer and the last step for my face is my Differin gel for my mild adult acne. I also use my Vaseline for my lips at night as well.

As I mentioned in my morning skin care routine, I had taken a lot of inspiration from a dermatologist named Dr. Dray on YouTube. I had actually found her when I was looking up reviews for Differin gel to see if it was the same formula as it was when it was being prescribed. When I would watch the skin care routines I thought, "well I have nothing to lose if I try it her way, and Dr. Dray's way must be trust worthy since she is a dermatologist." I have really enjoyed her simple way of doing a skin care routine and I feel like my face is not getting as dry as it would have been with the Differin gel.  I no longer use toners, serums or eye creams because they are not necessary steps in a good skin care routine. I also keep my products fairly cheep. I do not buy any more high-end products because they are usually heavily fragranced. Also some of the ingredients listed are the same as a good drug store version, so you are basically just paying for the name not higher quality ingredients. Lets go ahead and jump in to my night time skin care routine and I will take you step by step of what I do and why. I will also give you a review of what I think of the products I use and if I would repurchase them.

The first step I use in my skin care routine is an oil based cleanser. Now this may sound scary to some of you oily folks, but if you wear heavy make up or sunscreen then you really have to make sure that you remove it all with out scrubbing your skin. An oil based cleanser will just glide on the skin and remove that first layer of makeup and sunscreen so that your regular cleanser can actually work its magic and cleanse the skin so it is ready to receive other products such as moisturizer. The oil based cleanser I use is the Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil. I have a love/hate relationship with this product. I think it does a really great job removing my makeup and it doesn't leave a residue that is hard to get off my skin. But this product is pretty heavily fragranced. Two it smells like the green apple Jolly Ranchers, which is my favorite Jolly Rancher flavor.  So it doesn't smell bad to me and just makes me want green apple candy, but it makes me cringe when I am putting it on my face and using it for a skin care step. I think I might try to find an alternative, but until I find something else, I will keep using this because it does do a good job as a first step and it has not yet bothered my skin.

The next step I use is a foaming facial cleanser. I use the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser for normal to oily skin with my Clarisonic brush. I highly recommend the CeraVe line because they keep their products fragrance free, plus they have beneficial ingredients such as ceramides and niacinamide that help hydrate the skin. I also think they keep their products relatively affordable depending on what store you go to buy it at. The cheapest prices I have found are at Walmart and Target. It is a lot more expensive at Ulta, but if you wait for a sale such as buy one get one 50% off or even the buy two get one free, then I think you are actually getting a pretty good deal. I also always use the $3.50 Ulta coupons as you can use that on this product as it is a drugstore brand. This cleanser really helps get off the rest of the oil cleanser that I use and I love that it is foaming. Having a foaming cleanser is really not necessary its just a placebo effect, but if you like feel of having a foaming cleanser then this is a good one to try. They also have a hydrating cleanser I would like to try out because my face is getting to be on the drier side with the winter air and my acne treatment that I use. I recommend checking out CeraVe's website so that you are able to see what other products they have.

I do use my Clarisonc Mia 2 brush at night because, for me, using it morning and night was a little to much on my skin. I use the radiance brush head which is very soft and I use the lowest setting and light pressure. Even though this brush is pretty expensive, I think it is worth it because it is not a spinning brush head, it uses sonic wave which is think is a lot more gentler on the skin then a spinning brush head. You do not necessarily need to use a sonic device but I think if you really are going to invest in a sonic cleansing device I recommend this one because I have had good results with it and I do not have that need to try anything else because I truly do like this brush. On the website they say you can use this to remove your make up. But I don't use the brush that way because for one, I don't like getting makeup on the brush head as I feel it shortens the life of the brush. I also want it to just cleanse my bare skin so that I am able to get off the dead skin so that my moisturizers can penetrate deeper. Visit Clarisonic's website so that you are able to do your own research and decide if this is a device is something you need.

Since I wear heavy eye make up and use a lot of water proof products, I really need to go in with an eye make up remover.  I use the Mary Kay eye make up remover. It is a two phase eye make remover where you have to shake it to combine the two phases. I really do love this eye make up remover and have not found anything as good as this. The remover does not leave an oily residue at all which is what I love the most. When I try other eye make up removers that have the two phase I feel like they do leave some sort of oily residue. The only bad thing about this product is that it is hard to get your hands on it because you have to buy it through a consultant and then you have to usually wait for it to ship. So this is not a go get it on demand product unless your consultant keeps a stock of Mary Kay products on them. I think if you have a consultant and do not mind waiting for it to ship then I highly recommend this product. I do eventually want to find a eye make remover in the drug store for you guys just so you have another good option if you do not want to buy this one. Visit Mary Kay's website so you can see the other products they have and if you really do want to try this and do not have a consultant to buy from then you can type in the area you live in and they will give you a list of consulates to choose from. Some consulates can even just ship the product to your house if they have a online website.

The product I now use for my humectent is the Simple Water Boost Hydrating Gel Cream. This product is new to me and new in the stores. My favorite product by far is the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream, but that is pretty expensive and I was trying to find a cheaper alternative that is just as good. I have been using this for only about a week but it does not burn my skin like the Cetaphil daily hydrating lotion did. I think the Simple hydrating gel cream is just like its name, it's very simple with no fragrance or irritating ingredients. I think the Neutrogena one is a little more luxurious than the simple one. But if you are on a budget like I am, then I think this is a really good product to use to prevent transepidermal water loss. They have come out with a lot of new products this year and I am really interested in trying them out since it is a very affordable brand and they keep everything simple and fragrance free, so I have a lesser chance of having a bad reaction to their products.

The next moisturizer I use to seal in my hydrating gel cream humectant is the CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion. I am telling you guys, CeraVe is where it is at for good skin care. This lotion is very lightweight and it even says that it is ultra lightweight on the bottle. This product has their famous ceramides ingredients, niacinamide and hyluronic acid in it. This has to be one of my all time favorite products from this brand and I feel like I could not live with out this, it is just that good! I know that niacinamide could be irritating to some people but I have never had a problem with it. I have heard that if you use niacinamide the first couple times it will give you that burning sensation but then go away after using it a while. The first time I used this I did have that sensation but after about a week it did go away. My skin never looked red or irritated when this happened. I think I am almost out of this stuff because it is taking it a while to be pumped out of the bottle so I am going to need to go buy another one here soon so that when I do run out I have a fresh one waiting for me. Visit the link above for this particular moisturizer so that you are able to take a closer look at the ingredients list.

The last product that I use on my face is Differin Gel, also know as Adapaline 0.1%. This product used to be by prescription only from your doctor or dermatologist but now it has come out in stores as an over-the-counter acne treatment. I think I was prescribed this product at one point in my life as a teenager and I remember it working pretty good for me. I have had really good results with this product since it has come out as an over-the-counter treatment, and I think with the way I do my skin care routine my skin is ready to receive the full benefit of this treatment and my skin doesn't feel overly dry using it. I have seen a significant reduction of the black heads I had on my nose and chin and I break out much less often then I did before using this. Some people may use this for an atnti-aging benefit also. I am not sure if I can say that I am a good person to use it for softening the lines of wrinkles because I don't really have any at this point in my life. I did start to see a small smile line on the right side of my face and I do think that has decreased quite a bit. But I am also hydrating my skin much better now, so it could be a combination of good hydration and this product but I cannot say for sure.

Dr. Dray does talk about in one of her videos how anti-aging products are not a real thing.  Instead a good skin care regimen of hydrating the skin and preventing transepidermal water loss is what you really need to do.  I highly suggest this if you have acne even though it is kind of expensive. You really do not need much just a pea size amount for your entire face if you have acne all over. Or you could just use a smaller amount if you only have acne in certainer areas of your face such as your chin or forehead. This product should really last you quite a while because of the small amount you really need and you get a pretty good amount of product. Visit their website so that you are able to read more about this product.  They do not offer the ability to order this off their direct website, but you can order it off of Amazon or Ulta, or you can also just go into Walmart, Target, or Walgreens to buy it in store.

As for my lips I am still using plain Vaseline. I am not sure why people are scared to use petroleum jelly now but I think it is a good barrier for my lips to prevent dehydration of the lips. If you have a lanolin allergy then this is a good option for you. another good option that I have tried is the CeraVe healing ointment. The CeraVe has a few more ingredients such as the ceramides and hyaluronic acid, but i think they both preform just about the same. I never use this as a facial moisturizer or near my nose because this can clog you pores, I just strictly use it on my lips or if my nails and cuticles are dry from removing my shellac, then I will rub a little bit of this on them to prevent them from becoming more dry.

I hope you all enjoy my night time skin care routine and that I gave you some inspiration to revamp you skin care routine to a more simple one. If you are interested in any of the products that I mentioned above then I hope you have a better idea of why or why not you should use them. As always Live Life In Full Bloom.

Hey, everyone! Happy Friday eve and I hope you all are having an awesome week. Today I posted a video about my morning skin care routine. I have learned so much about skin care when I started watching Dr. Dray's YouTube channel.

I used to have a very complicated skin care routine with a facial serum, eye creams or gels, toners, and face scrubs that I got separately from my normal facial cleanser.  I found Dr. Dray's YouTube channel when I was looking up Differin Gel tips and tricks. I knew this gel would really dry out my skin since it has Adapalene 0.1% which is a Vitamin A derivative. I use this gel nightly to treat my mild adult acne (I will post a night time routine soon).

My skin type is combination oily and I do get adult acne and frequently break out. You will notice that I did not use a serum or an eye cream. I learned that a serum is really just a more watered down version of a moisturizer. I also learned that eye cream is a basic facial moisturizer but in different packaging and at a higher price. I feel like I have saved so much money because I am not buying anymore extra products and am keeping my skin care fairly cheep.

Dr. Dray stated that skin care is something that you need to maintain and that it is hard to maintain something when you are shelling out over a hundred dollars every three months. I also personally have noticed that higher end skincare usually has some sort of fragrance in it. Keep reading if you would like to see my daily skin care routine products that are simple and cost effective with a bonus mask for my Mask Mondays that I do.

For my morning skin care routine on a daily basis, I use a cleanser that has 0.2% salicylic acid, one humectant, two sunscreens and one lip balm. On Mondays I do like to treat myself to a mask.  The cleanser I used in this video is the Clean and Clear acne triple clear cleanser. I chose this cleanser because the brand, in my opinion, is very cost effective. I also chose it for the 0.2% salicylic acid. Even though the salicylic acid is in a face wash form and is only left on the skin for a short amount of time Dr. Dray stated that it does not need to be left on the skin for a long period of time in order to be effective. Salicylic acid works quickly by getting into the oil barring surface areas and gently sloughs off dead skin cells with no harsh scrubbing. I do enjoy this product but unfortunately is does have fragrance in it which can be irritating to the skin. The fragrance has not really bothered me at this point but I know that fragrance is really not good for the skin and I could potentially develop an allergy to what is in this cleanser.  Visit the Clean and Clear website so that you are able to see the list of ingredients of the product and to look at a few of the other things they offer.

The humectant I use is the Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion for dry, extra dry skin with Hyaluronic Acid. I mentioned in the video that this was not one of my favorite moisturizers. At times it did burn my skin but not all the time which I found strange since I pretty much do the same routine every morning with a few exceptions. This moisturizer was more of a watery gel base and I would not recommend it for extra dry skin as I personally do not think it would moisturize enough for an extra dry skin type. On the other hand, a very oily skin type might really enjoy using this product.  This product claims to provide immediate and lasting hydration and is non-comedogenic and fragrance free. I did run out of this product during the video and did not repurchase it. The one humectant that I can recommend at this time would be the Neutrogena Hydro Boost gel-cream. This product is fragrance free and is a bit more moisturizing then the Cetaphil lotion becuase it is gel-cream based. The Neutrogena Hydro Boost gel-cream does have hyluronic acid in it and I have never had a problem with this moisturizer and get really good results from it. Check out the Cetaphil website so that you can decide if this brand is for you.

The fist sunscreen that I used in this video was the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel lotion broad spectrum SPF 30. This sunscreen is relatively new to me but I was so excited to see it in stores and to try it out. Asian, Korean, and Japanese sunscreens are gel based and very light weight, perfect for combo oily skin types. I feel that American sunscreens are a little behind the times in the consistency and SPF protection.  I really do enjoy using this sunscreen as my first base layer. The consistency is like a gel cream but is very light weight, it is almost like water on the face. This product does unfortunately have fragrance in it. If you have used other products from the Neutrogena Hydro Boost line, aside from the gel-cream, this product smells just like the rest of that line. The smell is not offensive at all and I do like the smell, but again skin care should not have fragrance in it for the health of your skin. Even though this does have fragrance in it I will keep using it unless I develop and allergy to it, because I just love the way it feels on the skin. Again, visit the Neutrogena website so that you can check out the Hydro boost gel-cream, this sunscreen and any other products you are interested in.

The next sunscreen I used in my video was the CeraVe Am Facial Moisturizing lotion with Broad Spectrum SPF 30. I truly love all the CeraVa products I have tried. They really are very simple with out fragrance and no harsh ingredients. There is not one product that I have tried from this line that I have not liked. The products I have tried are the Foaming Facial Cleanser and the Pm Facial Moisturizing Lotion. I really enjoy this Am moisturizer because it does have added sun protection and I use it to seal in all my hydrating humectens on my face to prevent transepidermal water loss.   This product does feel a little greasy at first but once I let it dry it almost feels like a powder finish. I did recently see that they made this same sunscreen specifically for an oily skin type and has a matte finish. That will be the next product I try since I really trust the CeraVe's brand to be gentle on my skin and I feel confident in trying the other products they offer. But if they did not have that product available then I would be repurchasing the regular Am lotion. I really do recommend this brand if you are doing any acne treatments, have sensitive skin, or just have normal skin in general.  Check out CeraVe's website so that you are able to explore their other products.

The last product I used was just plain old Vaseline to hydrate my lips. I have not used plain Vaseline in a really long time but my lips have been very dry from the winter. When I was out shopping I saw that they had a small travel size pot and I thought this would be perfect to use as my lip balm and it would not take up too much space in my bathroom skin care drawer. I know they have products that are specifically made for the lips, but I learned that skin care companies like to put the same product in different packaging and sell it for more than what it is worth, when you can get a larger amount for a better value. Vaseline is pretty universal so I can use this for multiple things even to clean my house. Visit their website--they actually have quite a selection of products to look at and chose from.

I did use a bonus product in this video. I usually do a mask on Mondays because I feel like it just really gets my skin ready for the week. This feeling could just be a placebo effect but I think it's always nice to feel like you are treating and taking time for your self. The Mask I used in this video was the Pixi Skintreats GLOW-O2. This product was the most expensive product that I used in this video and honestly is is not a necessary step in good skin care. I did look up this product on their website which I will leave down below, but this does have fragrance in it. The lavender oil, lemon peel oil, orange peel oil, Bergamot oil, Fruit Oil and Pixibeauty website.  It looks like a lot of their skin care products are heavily fragranced so I cannot recommend any thing from their skin care line. But you can decide for your self if this could be a beneficial brand for you.

I really hope you enjoyed my video and reading my blog about my review of these products and the information I had to share about skin care and the health of your skin. I am always learning new things and trying to find ways to get the best bang for your buck. I feel like I have almost perfected my skin care routine but I also love trying out new things. I feel like I have a good foundation of knowledge about what I should be looking for ingredients-wise so that I am able to safely try out products with no potential reactions. Skin care is very personal and is trial and error, so I really hope this gives you some good information and inspiration to possibly re-vamp your skin care routine if needed. I will leave some links down below such as Dr. Drays channel and a video about Skin allergies and dermatitis tips: Q&A with a dermatologist, because she does talk about fragrance in this video and what to look for in a product that is truly Fragrance Free and is much more well-versed in skin care than me. As always Live Life In Full Bloom.
